On the 1st October 2011 the Welsh Carrier Bag Charge went live, which requires every retailer in Wales to charge a minimum of 5p for any carrier bag given out. The key objective of this initiative is to drastically reduce the number of bags given away, to tackle climate change, reduce litter, protect wildlife and encourage people to reuse bags. In line with the new legislation, Thorntons will be charging 5p for each carrier bag including VAT, which means that 4p will be going to our chosen Charity, NSPCC for Wales.

The NSPCC exists to protect all children from cruelty and the aim of the NSPCC is to live in a society where every child is happy, fulfilled and free from fear. The NSPCC works directly with those children and families who are most at risk. Through the generosity of their supporters, the NSPCC now has the opportunity to put a stop to more of the suffering experienced by children subjected to abuse and prevent more people from ever going through that trauma. In the most extreme cases, the NSPCC can even help to save more children’s lives.

From the NSPCC Cymru/Wales national centre in Cardiff, they provide services at the cutting edge of child protection. They inform government and other agencies, launch the most effective programmes possible and improve their knowledge of the difficult and challenging world of child cruelty. Cardiff is vital to the NSPCC’s aim of ending child cruelty and your support is vital in enabling the NSPCC to continue to deliver services that focus on:

- Children from black and minority ethnic families
- Children who have sufferent physical abuse
- Children and young people who have suffered sexual abuse
- Children under one.
