- Your questions
answered
We want you to buy in total confidence and really enjoy our
chocolates. We get asked lots of questions about how they’re
made, what’s in them – and what’s not. Here are a
few of the more popular queries, but if there’s something you
still want to know, please
get in touch.
Do you use genetically modified ingredients?
Nope. We don’t use GM in any of our products.
Are any of your products no artificial flavours and colours
(nafnac)?
Our entire kids range and all but a handful of our adult products
are nafnac. Where we haven’t yet been able to find natural
and equally delicious alternatives, we continue looking and are
confident that there are absolutely no health issues associated
with the few remaining artificial flavours and colours.
This chocolate doesn’t have nuts in it but the pack says
it may contain traces. What’s going on?
Sometimes, products containing nuts are made on the same line as
those without. We always give everything an incredibly thorough
clean, but we really don’t want to take any chances –
particularly as some people can have very severe and sensitive nut
allergies – so we always let you know on the packs.
What about dark chocolate? How come you don’t say
it’s milk / lactose free?
When we make dark chocolate, we often use the same pipelines as
when we’re making milk chocolate. As with the nuts (see
previous question), we always clean everything but we can’t
guarantee traces don’t remain. We just want to be extra
careful.
Do your products contain caffeine?
Chocolate is made with cocoa, which naturally contains caffeine. We
don’t add any extra caffeine. Generally, white chocolate
contains less caffeine than milk or dark chocolate.
Is your ice cream pasteurised? Yes, by law it has to be. The
egg we use is also pasteurised before it goes into the mix.
I’ve got coeliac disease and can’t eat gluten. Which
of your delicious-looking products can I eat?
Don’t worry, you can still enjoy lot’s of our great
products like toffee, fudge, no added sugar chocolates and many
more. Look out for additional information next to each product on
the site.
Do you sell any low-sugar chocolates suitable for diabetics?
Yes, loads!
Check out our large no added sugar section . They’ve got
all the great Thorntons taste but are made with less sugar and
added sweeteners. Our chocolatiers have recently made the recipe
even more delicious for anyone who wants less sugar in their
diet.
Is chocolate healthy
As with all delicious treats, chocolate is best enjoyed in
moderation and as part of a healthy, balanced diet due to its high
energy content. However, recent studies suggest it may have some
unexpected health benefits.
As science has progressed, the health benefits of chocolate have
remained a hot topic. Some believe chocolate can reduce heart
disease because it contains antioxidants, while others believe
flavonols in the chocolate can help lower blood pressure.
The cocoa butter used in quality chocolate – like Thorntons
– behaves like a monounsaturated fat (similar to olive oil)
and is therefore believed to make this type of chocolate more
healthy. Dark chocolate contains more cocoa butter than milk
chocolate.
One of the oft-mentioned benefits of chocolate is that it’s
an aphrodisiac! In fact the Aztecs banned women from drinking it
for this reason! Although unproved, some think it contains and
encourages the release of chemicals in the brain that reproduce the
feeling of being in love.
